EPSRC-funded PhD studentship on "Human exposure to indoor air pollution" |
Organisation |
Public & Environmental Health Research Unit, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine |
Website |
|
Location |
University of London, U.K |
Area |
University of London, U.K |
Description |
There is strong evidence that certain air pollutant concentrations inside houses may exceed outdoor pollution levels, causing adverse health effects among residents. This PhD project will investigate the human exposure to air pollutants in houses and buildings that may results from use of energy micro-generation appliances (gas boilers, cookers, etc.) or other sources (consumer products, building materials, etc.) The effect of building ventilation/insulation and penetration of outdoor air pollution into the indoor environment will be also studied in detail. A range of quantitative exposure assessment techniques will be explored, tested and improved. This will involve use of mathematical models, literature surveys and possibly experimental monitoring campaigns in buildings.
The studentship is available with immediate effect at the Public and Environmental Health Research Unit of LSHTM through the EPSRC-funded consortium project PUrE-INTRAWISE (Pollutant in the Urban Environment - An Integrated Framework for Improving Sustainability of the Indoor Environment). The overall aim of the project is to develop an integrated decision-support framework for more sustainable management of indoor pollution associated with the provision, conservation and use of energy in buildings. The framework will be applied to a number of case studies that will compare environmental, health and economic implications of the principal options for future home energy provision as an aid to policy development. This multi-disciplinary project will be carried out in collaboration with the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science at the University of Manchester, the Complex Built Environment Systems group at UCL, and the Engineering Centre at Sheffield University.
The award for the PUrE-INTRAWISE studentship is £55,840 that will cover tuition fees at UK/EU rate and a maintenance grant for a period of three years.
Applicants must be UK or EU citizens, or ordinarily resident in the UK throughout the 3-year period immediately preceding the date of the award.
The ideal candidate would have (or expect to obtain) a good first degree and a Masters degree or equivalent in a scientific or engineering discipline. Knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines would be an advantage: environmental science, environmental physics, environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, mathematical modelling, environmental health, risk analysis, statistics. |
