PUrE Sustainability Assessment Software - Launch Event |
| Location |
Arup, Fitzroy Street, London |
| Details |
The PUrE Decision-support framework will be launched on June 24th in London at Arup’s conference facilities. The PUrE software will be demonstrated with reference to four case studies:
- Environmental and human health impacts of pollutants in Sheffield
- The role of the Green Grid in London in reducing urban pollution and health impacts
- Legacy Pollution: Assessing emission policies on ecological and health impacts for the former Avonmouth smelter
- Considering uncertainty in sustainability assessment
Please contact Stephen.Daniels@manchester.ac.uk if you wish to attend or require further information. Also see http://www.pureframework.org/ for more information about PUrE. |

'Significance’ in Air Quality Assessments (planning and EIA) |
| Location |
Arup, Fitzroy Street, London |
| Details |
The EPUK (formerly NSCA) Guidance on planning and air quality is due to be updated in 2009. This document is widely used and the significance criteria hotly debated. In order to inform the update of the Guidance, this meeting will formulate an IAQM view on the significance criteria to feed into the update of the guidance. The format of the meeting will be: · Present EPUK Guidance on Significance Criteria - Duncan Laxen (Air Quality Consultants) · Air Quality Significance Criteria in Planning Decisions and EIA - Claire Holman (Peter Brett Associates) · Break · Examples of using Guidance (up to 5 or 6 x 10 minute slots) · Decision on IAQM contribution. |

Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases: Science, Reduction Policy & Implementation |
| Location |
Wageningen, The Netherlands |
| Details |
The Air Quality and Climate Change Section of the Netherlands Association of Environmental Professionals (VVM) organizes its Fifth International Symposium on science, implementation and policy aspects of non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases (NCGG-5). NCGG-5 will be held in Wageningen in The Netherlands and will address not only the role of non-CO2 greenhouse gases and aerosol in human-induced climate change, but also cost-effective options for reduction and its implementation in industry and society. The symposium aims to remove barriers beween policy and science and fosters the dialogue between scientists, engineers and officials in industry and government, which are all, though from a different perspective, involved in non-CO2 greenhouse gas issues.. See here for further details. |

Biomass & Air Quality : Managing the Impacts |
| Location |
Institute of Environmental Health, London |
| Details |
A major expansion in biomass heat is underway to help the UK meet its CO2 reduction targets. The air quality impacts are, however, potentially a stumbling block, the successful management of these is key to a sustainable rollout of biomass heat. This event explores how the air quality impacts of biomass can be successfully managed, cover biomass technologies and their emission performance, before examining the regulatory framework and techniques for air quality assessment. Emerging renewable heat and air quality policy will be covered, and the issue of embedding air quality management in the planning process for biomass deployment Topics include:
• Policy update (DECC)
• Regulation of biomass plant (Environment Agency)
• Developing sustainable wood fuel supply chains (Forestry Commission) |

Nitrogen Dioxide - Time for Compliance |
| Location |
Aston Business School (Lakeside Centre) |
| Details |
Compliance with nitrogen dioxide standards is now on the agenda like never before, and the UK must deliver a credible plan for compliance to obtain a time extension on EU air quality standards. This year\'s Environmental Protection UK Autumn Air Quality Update will explore practical local actions to tackle nitrogen dioxide, and how local and national actions can effectively work together. A particular focus will rest on cost effective action that delivers dual benefits for both air quality and climate change. Other air quality topics will not be forgotten, and the event will include the latest updates on:
• Biomass and air quality
• Defra policy
• Planning and air quality assessment |
